The Health Department is edging closer to its target to vaccinate 300 000 people every day.

In the most recent 24-hour reporting period, almost 267 000 people were given the jab. Currently, people over the age of 18 are flocking to vaccination centres across the country, after the last registration period for adults, which opened at the end of last week. More than 11 million vaccines have so far, been administered. Over 5 million people have now been fully vaccinated in the country.

Earlier this week, the renowned epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim emphasised the importance of South Africa reaching a high vaccination rate, saying it will help prevent high levels of fatalities during the fourth wave of infections. He says countries that have high vaccination rates would be able to better withstand the impact of a ravaging fourth wave.
