The City of Cape Town is set to unlock new private sector investment opportunities with its latest property auction, taking place on Thursday, 29 May 2025.
Thirteen City-owned properties, spanning residential, industrial, and commercial use, will be made available to bidders both in person and online.
According to Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, the auction is a key part of the City’s strategy to release unused, well-located properties that are not needed for municipal purposes.
“This auction represents more than just the sale of land – it is a catalyst for inclusive economic growth,” said Vos.
“By creating space for private sector-led development, we’re enabling job creation, investment, and economic upliftment across Cape Town.”
The properties on offer include 11 improved and two vacant sites, located in areas such as Constantia, Philippi, Woodstock, Gardens, Maitland, Khayelitsha, Vredehoek, and Kraaifontein.
A standout listing is a 9.2-hectare industrial site in Wynland Industrial Park, Kraaifontein.
Zoned for heavy industrial use and strategically situated along the N1 corridor, the site is expected to attract major investment and drive regional development. The area is supported by robust power infrastructure, including the recently commissioned 40 MVA Denova substation.
Another notable offering is a vacant erf in Khayelitsha, which is reserved exclusively for first-time homebuyers earning between R13,000 and R22,000 per month.
Vos emphasized that proceeds from the auction will be reinvested into municipal infrastructure and service delivery, delivering tangible benefits for Cape Town’s residents and businesses.
“No government should act as a land bank. Properties that serve no strategic or service delivery need must be unlocked to drive economic activity.”
