Western Cape Launches Urgent Catch-up Immunisation Drive for Children

Published on

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is urging all parents and caregivers to ensure their children are fully immunised as the province launches its National Immunisation Catch-up Drive from 1 to 30 November 2025.

Monique Johnstone, spokesperson for the department, says the campaign aims to close a worrying immunity gap caused by missed vaccinations, after infant coverage in the province fell below the 95% target.

“Many children remain at risk of serious, preventable diseases, including measles, polio, tuberculosis, diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus.”

She added that the call to action comes amid a measles outbreak in Khayelitsha and rising diphtheria cases in the Cape Metropole.

“Mass immunisation services are being provided at schools, preschools, and clinics, while healthcare teams conduct contact tracing to prevent further spread. Improving vaccination coverage is crucial to protect vulnerable children and create herd immunity for the wider community.”

How the catch-up drive works:

  • From 1–30 November, all public health facilities in the Western Cape will provide free catch-up vaccinations for children who may have missed routine doses.
  •  No appointment is needed during this period.
  • Community outreach events will bring services closer to families. Parents are advised to contact their local clinic for schedules.
  • Vaccinations are also available at private providers, though for a fee.

Health authorities are urging parents to take full advantage of the initiative, ensuring children are protected and helping curb outbreaks of preventable diseases across the province.
