The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that it is aware of an incident involving a Grade 10 learner at a school in Gansbaai last week.

It is alleged that a group of learners physically attacked another learner at Gansbaai Academia on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, leaving the Grade 10 learner unconscious and suffering from a concussion.

The learner was allegedly instructed by a group of pupils to go to a fence, where someone was waiting to speak to him. When he refused, he was allegedly assaulted.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says the learners involved face disciplinary action.

“The department was informed of the incident and the learners allegedly involved have been identified and the school’s disciplinary processes, in line with its code of conduct, are underway. Support structures were also activated, including a referral for social work support. The matter remains under investigation, and we await the outcome of the disciplinary process.”

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana has since confirmed that three teenagers have been arrested.

“This office confirms that three male suspects aged 14 and 15 were arrested for assault common.”

Mpendukana said the minors were due to appear before the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. However, he confirmed that the matter did not go ahead in court.

“They were due to appear in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court yesterday, but the matter was not enrolled. Kindly forward your enquiry to the spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority for more information.”
