A call for action against gender-based violence (GBV) will be heard at Princess Vlei in Grassy Park on Heritage Day, with One Billion Rising South Africa set to host a solidarity walk calling on communities to stand together against violence against women and children.

The event will take place on Thursday, 24 September 2026, from 9am to 11am.

Organiser and coordinator Lucinda Evans says the walk is aimed at bringing people together to raise their voices against GBV and show solidarity with those affected.

“We are inviting not only women, but men as well to join us on the day. This walk is in solidarity of the carnage where we find ourselves with the high rate of GBV.”

Evans says the event is about standing together at a time when many families continue to feel the devastating impact of GBV.

Participants are being encouraged to come dressed in black and purple and to bring their own posters with messages of support and resistance.

No political attire will be allowed.

The walk comes as South Africa faces renewed concern over GBV, following the discovery of the bodies of several women in Gauteng since July.

The discovery of a ninth woman’s body earlier this morning has added to concerns and calls for urgent action against violence targeting women.

For organisers, the walk is an opportunity for communities to come together, remember those who have lost their lives and make their voices heard against the ongoing violence.
