West Rand calls for army deployment against illegal mining

Residents of Kagiso on Gauteng’s West Rand have again called for the government to deploy the army to deal a blow to illegal mining operations in the area. They say the police cannot ensure communities’ safety or secure unused mines. The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele visited the area this weekend as part of a crime imbizo. He was accompanied by the National Police Commissioner, Fannie Mosemola. This follows the mass rapes of eight women in the area.
