Langa police have opened an inquest following a devastating fire at the Siyahlala informal settlement in Langa in the early hours of this morning.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed that the bodies of an adult woman and three children, aged between three and six, were found among the debris.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.”

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse says the fire was contained by 6:30 am.

“Just after 4:00am, we received calls of structures alight, with people trapped inside. Initial estimates are that 15 structures were destroyed, leaving several people displaced.”

Aid organisation Gift of the Givers is on the scene, providing humanitarian support to affected families.

This tragic fire follows a weekend of destructive fires across several communities, including Nomzamo, Gugulethu, Dunoon, Fisantekraal, and Klapmuts, leaving many residents in urgent need of assistance.
