The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Western Cape is calling for greater caution and responsibility on the province’s roads following two tragic crashes that have claimed lives and left several people injured.

The organisation says it is deeply saddened by the loss of life in a multi-vehicle collision on Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Cape Town, as well as a separate crash in the Prince Albert area.

SANTACO Western Cape Public Relations Officer Makhosandile Tumana says behind every person killed in a road crash is a family and a community left to deal with the pain of losing a loved one.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. Behind every life lost is a family and a community now grieving, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Nelson Mandela Boulevard crash involved three minibus taxis and happened in the inbound lane, before Browning Road, shortly before 8am on Monday, 14 September 2026.

Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs confirmed that a 60-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene.

“Three people sustained serious injuries, while another 10 were treated for minor injuries.”

Meanwhile, Woodstock police have opened a culpable homicide case. Police say initial reports indicate that a taxi driver lost control of the vehicle.

“According to reports, a taxi driver lost control of the vehicle resulting in an adult female victim being declared deceased in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, meanwhile, four other victims are currently under medical treatment for the injuries sustained during the accident.”

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is continuing.

Tumana says SANTACO will work with the relevant authorities where public transport operators are involved, as investigations continue to establish exactly what happened.

He says the taxi industry has a responsibility to ensure that safety remains a priority.

“As an industry entrusted with transporting people every day, we carry a responsibility to put safety first. SANTACO does not condone reckless or irresponsible driving and is urging operators, drivers and all road users to exercise the highest level of care on the roads.”
