The Western Cape Health Department has confirmed an incident at the Kalbaskraal Satellite Clinic in Malmesbury on Monday, 14 September, following reports of a shooting at the facility.
According to the department, a group of men entered the clinic while looking for a patient. When they could not find the person, they left the facility.
Staff alerted private security and the South African Police Service (SAPS), who responded and safely escorted the staff from the clinic. The facility was then closed for the remainder of the day as a precaution.
The Health Department says the incident left staff feeling threatened and intimidated. Counselling and psychosocial support will be made available to affected staff members.
“Incidents such as this do not only traumatise staff; they can also disrupt essential healthcare services for the vulnerable communities we serve. Our healthcare workers come to work every day committed to caring for patients and supporting their communities, and they deserve to do so in a safe and secure environment,” the department said.
The department condemned any form of violence, intimidation or threatening behaviour at healthcare facilities.
“The safety and wellbeing of our healthcare workers and patients remain our highest priority. Healthcare facilities must remain safe spaces where patients can access care and where healthcare workers can perform their duties without fear,” the department added.
Meanwhile, Malmesbury police say they are aware of reports of a shooting in Kalbaskraal, but no criminal case was registered for further investigation.
