As South Africa observes World Fire Safety Day, authorities are reminding residents that preventing fires begins with awareness and simple precautions at home and in the workplace.
Executive Mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Elna von Schlicht, says the annual observance aims to highlight the devastating impact of fires and the importance of preparedness, ahead of the fire season.
“ It is not too late to prepare. Landowners and homeowners, especially those living close to natural areas, still have time to clear the spaces around their homes. Owners of vacant land should ensure that alien vegetation is removed, that clearing is done correctly, and that all waste is properly disposed. Together, we can make this fire season a safe one for our citizens, animals, and beautiful natural environment .”
The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says thousands of people are affected annually by fires in homes, businesses, and informal settlements.
“It is important to know how fires start, what steps you can take to prevent them, and how to ensure your safety and that of others. Smoking cigarettes or using matches, lighters, candles, heating appliances and equipment such as electric blankets can all cause fires if not carefully monitored. Many fires are easily preventable if you follow a few basic safety guidelines.”
Officials emphasise that many household fires are preventable and that awareness remains the most powerful tool in saving lives and protecting property.
