MyCiTi bus station in Claremont taking shape

MyCiTi Claremont

The City says construction of the new MyCiTi bus station in Claremont is progressing well, with the installation of 583 concrete piles now being completed.

The piling forms the foundation on which the station building and future overhead development will be supported.

The old bus terminus along Claremont Boulevard, between Hawthorne Road and Newry Street, has been demolished and removed, and the construction of a new MyCiTi bus station is now under way in the heart of Claremont, within walking distance from the Claremont railway station and the minibus-taxi facility in Ralph Street.

Once complete, the new bus terminus will accommodate not only the MyCiTi bus service, but also Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) shuttle service for students.

This project forms part of the MyCiTi bus service expansion that will connect Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Claremont and Wynberg.

The MMC for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, says teams have started concrete casting for the lifts, stairwells and columns on the ground floor.

“The stormwater pipe installation along Claremont Boulevard will be the next challenge; working meters underground next to a busy road with existing services in the way is no small thing. But our teams know what they are doing and I have tremendous faith in them.”

Quintas says the Claremont MyCiTi station will also be able to “grow upwards” – up to about ten storeys of mixed-use development, which will boost the vibrancy and efficiency of this public transport precinct.

“This precinct is set to become one of Cape Town’s most connected and integrated transport hubs. Commuters will have access to five different public transport options: MyCiTi, Golden Arrow, the UCT Shuttle, rail, and minibus-taxis, all within a 120-metre footprint. Transferring between different public transport modes will be easy and efficient, whether heading to the metro south-east along the MyCiTi trunk route or on to Cape Town by train, taxi or bus.”

If all goes as planned, the Claremont MyCiTi bus station should be operational by March 2028.

Drinking in Public Leads to Crayfish Arrest

West coast lobster seized and arrest made

A 69-year-old Hout Bay resident was arrested after Law Enforcement officers uncovered 1,848 West Coast rock lobster tails and more than R17 000 during a patrol in the Hout Bay and Wynberg area.

The City says officers from the Marine Unit were on duty when they noticed people drinking in public in a parking area near Victoria Hospital. The officers intervened and searched a white Mitsubishi vehicle.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith confirmed that during the search, they discovered the large consignment of crayfish, along with R17 600 in cash.

“This incident highlights the audacity of so many lawbreakers in our city who remain convinced that they will not be caught. How else does one explain openly breaking the law by consuming alcohol in public, knowing that you are in possession of contraband?”

The suspect was arrested at the scene and detained at the Wynberg police station.

A 45-year-old suspect was arrested in a major intelligence-led operation in Delft yesterday and is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 11 June 2026, after officers uncovered drugs with an estimated street value of R1.5 million.

The arrest follows a tip-off from the community about alleged illegal activities at a house in the area.

According to the Hawks, officers recovered 7,000 mandrax tablets, as well as cocaine and tik, during a joint operation.

“In one of the rooms, a brown crossbody bag was found containing 7,000 full mandrax tablets. Upon further search, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine (tik) were also discovered. The estimated value of the drugs is R1.5 million.”
