The Western Cape Police says law enforcement agencies are on high alert, with deployments set to unfold strategically at identified locations ahead of the anticipated commencement of the 30 June anti-immigration protest action.
According to Brigadier Novela Potelwa, all six districts within the province have reportedly activated their Joint Operational Centres for coordination purposes.
Integrated operations will comprise key role players such as the SAPS, departments of Home Affairs, Social Development, Health, Intelligence Services, Traffic Services, City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement officials, Metro Police supported by Community Policing Forums, consular offices and community-based organisations.
Potelwa added that law enforcement officials will be strategically deployed on foot, horseback and in vehicles. The SAPS Drone and Air Wing Units will complement the deployments, particularly in inaccessible areas.
“The SAPS recognises the constitutional right of citizens to embark on protest action, however participants are urged to conduct themselves within the confines of the law. Participants are warned against carrying dangerous weapons such as sticks, sjamboks, knives, spears and other traditional weapons.” added Brigadier Novela Potelwa
The concealment of faces by means of face masks, balaclavas and scarves is reportedly also prohibited.
“Law enforcement officials will not hesitate to take decisive action when situations warrant.”
Residents have been urged to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.
Police also reminded community members that they do not have the authority to determine the legal status of any individual in the country, as that specific responsibility is entrusted by law to dedicated government officials.
The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and to report any incidents of violence, incitement to commit violence, intimidation, damage to property or other criminal activities to their nearest police station or the SAPS Emergency Number.
At the same time, the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate is working closely in support of SAPS and the Department of Home Affairs to deal with possible disruptions and unrest related to planned ‘shutdown’ protests.
The City has reportedly already activated area-based Joint Operations Centres to monitor for any disruptions and credible threats. The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is also assisting with the coordination of humanitarian relief efforts at the Epping Refugee Centre.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said its key priorities are to prevent violence and protect the public; monitor, manage and respond to the planned 30 June 2026 march and any associated actions; maintain public order across all four Metropolitan areas; and ensure a swift, visible and coordinated response to any incident of intimidation, looting or violence.
“We will not tolerate any violence or disruptions in our City. We are also alert to opportunistic criminals who might want to exploit the situation. Our enforcement agencies will use all of the tools available to them to act swiftly and decisively against any person who breaks the law.” added Smith.
