Thousands raised to help Chevaan become a paramedic

paramedic

A crowdfunding campaign has raised more than R72,000 for a young Kuils River man who helped deliver a baby at a petrol station and dreams of becoming a paramedic.

The Back-a-Buddy campaign for 21-year-old Chevaan Abrahams has already surpassed its R50,000 target, attracting support from hundreds of donors.

Abrahams was working a night shift at a Shell garage in Kuils River when a pregnant woman arrived in active labour. Remaining calm under pressure, he stepped in to help while being guided by a paramedic over the phone until emergency services arrived.

The baby boy was safely delivered, and the mother later expressed her gratitude for his assistance. The mother named her new son Jordan Chevaan Bantam as a tribute to the young man who helped her.

The incident drew widespread praise, including from Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, who described Abrahams as an “extraordinary young man” and one of the province’s many quiet heroes.

Abrahams has long dreamed of becoming a paramedic and said the experience reinforced his belief that his goal is within reach.

The fundraising campaign, started by well-known content creator Cool Story Bru!, aims to help him pursue his studies and take the next step towards a career in emergency medical services.

Knitters across South Africa are being encouraged to pick up their needles this Saturday, 13 June, as the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement celebrates Worldwide Knit in Public Day.

The annual global event brings crafters together in public spaces to knit, crochet and connect and is observed in more than 50 countries.

Exclusive Books has partnered with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day to provide welcoming spaces for knitters at several branches across the country this Saturday, between 11:00 and 12:00, including at the V&A Waterfront and Cavendish.

The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative is titled Crocheting New Circles of Friendship, and beginners have also been invited to come along and learn new skills, connect and contribute to blanket-making projects that support vulnerable communities.

Participating stores will provide refreshments, wool, crochet hooks and knitting needles, while volunteers from 67 Blankets, including Ambassadors and KnitWits, will introduce newcomers to crochet and encourage them to become part of the movement’s growing network of #GoodWool volunteers.

In addition to the Exclusive Books activations, the KnitWits will also host a community knit-in at Blue Route Mall from 10:00 to 14:00, welcoming knitters and crocheters of all skill levels.

In Hermanus, Ocean Basket Hermanus will host a community knit-in from 12:00 to 16:00, while in George, the George KnitWits will gather at Outeniqua Lifestyle Centre from 10:00.

UPDATE: Officer hands himself in, after Belhar car accident

Snippets from the video footage recorded after the reported crash.

The Western Cape SAPS has confirmed that a man has handed himself over to police, following a recent car accident near Belhar, in which a police vehicle was involved.

The incident occurred on the Stellenbosch Arterial Road near the R300 bridge on Saturday, 6 June, and involved two vehicles.

Footage taken after the incident has been doing the rounds on social media, showing angry residents confronting a man (who is not wearing an official uniform) in the driver’s seat of the police vehicle. They accuse him of violating road laws and causing the accident.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain F.C. Van Wyk, said the man handed himself over at the Belhar police station on Wednesday. He was charged with reckless and negligent driving.

“He was arrested and charged and warned to appear in the Bellville Magistrates court on Wednesday, 2026-06-17 for a charge of reckless and negligent driving. More charges could be added,” said Van Wyk.

Van Wyk noted that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

“Belhar police registered a reckless and negligent driving case following an accident involving two vehicles including a police vehicle on Saturday, 2026-06-06 at about 17:30 at Stellenbosch Arterial Road, Belhar,” Van Wyk said in a statement issued before the latest arrest.

His arrest comes after DA Member of Parliament Nicholas Gotsell alleged that the man, who he said is a SAPS officer, fled the scene of the crash.

In a video on social media on Monday, Gotsell identified the officer as Sergeant Sonamzi and claimed he left the scene before police arrived.

“I’ve just confirmed that he’s not been charged with fleeing the scene of an accident or reckless and negligent driving or defeating the ends of justice,” said Gotsell.

In a separate video the following day, Gotsell claimed that the officer was “still missing”.

“But now the question arises, how did he get away from that accident scene? Who helped him?”

He also noted concerns over the impact of the SAPS vehicle involved in the crash, noting that officers are already struggling to serve in local communities due to limited resources.

While Gotsell welcomed the arrest in this case, he believes the man is being protected.

Meanwhile, Van Wyk clarified the whereabouts of the police vehicle allegedly involved in the accident.

“The allegation that the police vehicle in question was parked at 35 Squadron is not true. It was towed to the place where the vehicle was based as per Standard Operating Procedure regarding state vehicles involved in accidents,” said Van Wyk.

Cape Town Marathon Earns Major Status, Making History for Africa!

marathon

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has officially secured its place among the world’s most prestigious road races, becoming the first African event to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors series from 2027.

The announcement, made by the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) on Wednesday, confirms that the Cape Town race will become the eighth member of the elite global marathon series when it takes place on 23 May 2027.

The event joins an exclusive group that includes the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Sydney Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon and New York City Marathon.

The milestone follows Cape Town’s successful completion of a rigorous evaluation process during the 2026 race, which assessed everything from athlete experience and race operations to safety standards and elite competition.

AbbottWMM Chief Executive Officer, Dawna Stone, described the decision as a landmark moment for both the series and the continent.

“It gives me huge pleasure to welcome Cape Town to the family,” Stone said, praising the race’s growth, the dedication of organisers and the unique experience offered by the city.

She said Africa’s first Major would bring a new dimension to the global marathon series and provide runners from around the world with a memorable racing experience.

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon CEO Clark Gardner said the achievement was a historic moment that belonged to generations of African runners.

“To join the Abbott World Marathon Majors as Africa’s first is a profound honour. This is a moment generations of African runners have waited for,” Gardner said.

The announcement also moves runners one step closer to a new challenge within the AbbottWMM programme. Cape Town will now count towards the future Nine Star Medal, which is expected to include a ninth race should the Shanghai Marathon successfully complete its final evaluation later this year.

Organisers confirmed that the existing Six Star Medal programme will remain in place for runners completing the original six major marathons.

The elevation of the Cape Town race is expected to boost international tourism, attract thousands of additional runners and spectators, and further cement Cape Town as one of the world’s premier marathon destinations.

MyCiTi bus station in Claremont taking shape

MyCiTi Claremont

The City says construction of the new MyCiTi bus station in Claremont is progressing well, with the installation of 583 concrete piles now being completed.

The piling forms the foundation on which the station building and future overhead development will be supported.

The old bus terminus along Claremont Boulevard, between Hawthorne Road and Newry Street, has been demolished and removed, and the construction of a new MyCiTi bus station is now under way in the heart of Claremont, within walking distance from the Claremont railway station and the minibus-taxi facility in Ralph Street.

Once complete, the new bus terminus will accommodate not only the MyCiTi bus service, but also Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) shuttle service for students.

This project forms part of the MyCiTi bus service expansion that will connect Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Claremont and Wynberg.

The MMC for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, says teams have started concrete casting for the lifts, stairwells and columns on the ground floor.

“The stormwater pipe installation along Claremont Boulevard will be the next challenge; working meters underground next to a busy road with existing services in the way is no small thing. But our teams know what they are doing and I have tremendous faith in them.”

Quintas says the Claremont MyCiTi station will also be able to “grow upwards” – up to about ten storeys of mixed-use development, which will boost the vibrancy and efficiency of this public transport precinct.

“This precinct is set to become one of Cape Town’s most connected and integrated transport hubs. Commuters will have access to five different public transport options: MyCiTi, Golden Arrow, the UCT Shuttle, rail, and minibus-taxis, all within a 120-metre footprint. Transferring between different public transport modes will be easy and efficient, whether heading to the metro south-east along the MyCiTi trunk route or on to Cape Town by train, taxi or bus.”

If all goes as planned, the Claremont MyCiTi bus station should be operational by March 2028.
