Diplomatic missions in touch with South Africans stranded in Middle East

iran
The iconic Burj al Arab luxury hotel in Dubai was on fire tonight after it was struck by debris from an intercepted drone.

South Africa’s Head of Public Diplomacy, Clayson Monyela, says the government is in contact with South Africans stranded in the Middle East amid escalating tensions and widespread airspace closures.

It has been a fast-moving situation, following the announcement that the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran.

In a social media update, Monyela said it is currently impossible to move in or out of several countries as flights remain suspended.

He confirmed diplomatic missions are communicating with citizens, including those in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, through multiple platforms and that evacuation plans are in place.

The government says various intervention options are now being explored as the situation continues to unfold.

Cape Town Tourism had earlier issued a travel advisory warning passengers of confirmed global flight disruptions affecting routes to and from South Africa.

It comes amid Iranian retaliatory strikes that have been reported in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait, all locations hosting US military bases or allied governments.

Dubai’s Airport was struck, resulting in four staff sustaining injuries and receiving prompt medical attention.

The iconic Burj al Arab luxury hotel in Dubai was also on fire on Saturday night after it was struck by debris from an intercepted drone. No injuries were reported.

Iranian State Media earlier confirmed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in his office during US-Israeli air strikes on Saturday morning.

In a statement on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump described Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in history” and urged Iranians to “take back their country”.

40 senior Iranian officials were also reportedly killed in the strikes, including the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran has since vowed what it calls a “devastating” retaliation against US and Israeli targets.

Iran’s Red Crescent says more than 200 people have been killed across the country, including dozens reportedly killed when a girls’ school was hit during the attacks.

In a statement issued on Saturday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa called for urgent dialogue, warning that the situation threatens global peace and security.

Ramaphosa condemned violations of international law, stressing that a self-defence attack cannot be based on anticipation or assumption.

The President says lasting peace cannot be achieved through military confrontation, calling instead for intensified diplomacy, mediation, and meaningful negotiations to de-escalate the crisis.

Cape Town Tourism issues Travel Advisory amid Middle East conflict

Global aviation routes remain under severe pressure after the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran, triggering retaliatory action from Tehran and widespread airspace closures across parts of the Middle East.

Airspaces over Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Dubai have been shut, forcing airlines to cancel, delay or reroute flights along one of the world’s busiest aviation corridors linking Europe, Asia and Africa.

The disruption comes as Iran reportedly launched retaliatory strikes following the attacks, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict and creating immediate knock-on effects for international travel.

Cape Town Tourism has issued a travel advisory warning passengers of confirmed global flight disruptions affecting routes to and from South Africa.

In a statement released on Saturday, the organisation urged travellers to verify flight details before heading to the airport, as schedules continue to change rapidly.

Travellers are strongly advised to contact their airline, travel agent or the airport directly to confirm the latest flight status. Passengers affected by cancellations or delays are encouraged to contact their travel agencies for rebooking and further assistance.

Cape Town Tourism said it is closely monitoring developments and remains in contact with key aviation and tourism partners as the situation evolves.

Authorities emphasised that passenger safety remains the top priority, advising travellers to expect ongoing disruptions, allow extra travel time and ensure travel insurance policies are current and provide adequate cover.

Passengers are also encouraged to follow official news updates and travel advisories as the security situation in the Middle East continues to develop, with further flight impacts possible in the coming days.

Cape Town Tourism said additional updates will be issued as soon as new information becomes available through its official communication channels.

R3.3 million in drugs, on-route to Cape Town, confiscated in Beaufort West

drugs

The Western Cape Police have announced that it has confiscated more than R3 million worth of drugs during an operation in Beaufort West. The drugs were destined for Cape Town.

The officer of the provincial police commissioner said on Friday morning, 27 February, members of the Central Karoo Flying Squad and K-9 units conducted a vehicle checkpoint at the Weighbridge on the N1 road near Beaufort West.

A truck from Gauteng, on its way to Cape Town, was stopped for a routine search.

During the search of the truck the following was discovered in the trailer:

• 3,362kg of tik
• 22 000 mandrax tablets
• 131,5kg higher grade outdoor dagga

The estimated street value of the consignment is R3 328 700.

The truck driver and his passenger, both foreign nationals, aged 38 and 41 respectively, were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs.

Both suspects are due to appear in the Beaufort West Magistrates’ court on Monday, 2 March.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, commended the members for the recovery of the drugs as well as ensuring the perpetrators were arrested.

WATCH: Trump confirms “major combat operations” in Iran

iran

US President Donald Trump has confirmed the United States has launched “major combat operations” in Iran, following Israel’s “pre-emptive strikes” on Iranian targets.

He made the announcement in a video posted on Truth Social.

Explosions and rising smoke have been reported across Tehran, while Israel has declared a state of emergency amid fears of retaliatory missile attacks, with sirens sounding nationwide.

The escalation comes after failed nuclear negotiations, with Trump warning the US would act decisively to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Below is a transcript of what Trump said in the video:

A short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran.

Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard, terrible people. Its menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas, and our allies throughout the world.

For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted Death to America and waged an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder, targeting the United States, our troops, and innocent people in many countries. Among the regime’s first acts was backing the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, holding dozens of American hostages for 444 days.

In 1983, Iran’s proxies carried out the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut that killed 241 American military personnel. In 2000, they were probably involved in the attack on the USS Cole. Iranian forces killed and maimed hundreds of American service members in Iraq, and regime proxies have continued attacks against American forces and vessels in recent years.

From Lebanon to Yemen and Syria to Iraq, the regime has armed, trained, and funded terrorist militias responsible for widespread violence. Iran’s proxy Hamas launched the October 7th attacks on Israel, killing more than 1,000 people, including 46 Americans, and taking hostages.

Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terror and has also killed many of its own citizens during protests. It has always been the policy of the United States that this regime can never have a nuclear weapon.

In Operation Midnight Hammer last June, we obliterated the regime’s nuclear program at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. After that attack, we warned them never to resume their pursuit of nuclear weapons and repeatedly sought a deal, but Iran refused and rejected opportunities to renounce its nuclear ambitions.

Instead, Iran attempted to rebuild its nuclear program and develop long-range missiles capable of threatening allies in Europe, U.S. troops overseas, and potentially the American homeland.

For these reasons, the United States military is undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this dictatorship from threatening America and our national security interests. We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry. It will be obliterated. We will also annihilate their navy and ensure terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region or attack our forces.

We will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. They will never have a nuclear weapon. This regime will learn that no one should challenge the strength of the United States Armed Forces.

My administration has taken steps to minimize risk to U.S. personnel, but casualties are possible in war. We undertake this mission for the future so Americans and our children are never threatened by a nuclear-armed Iran. We pray for every service member risking their lives and trust they will prevail.

To members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces, and police: lay down your weapons and receive complete immunity, or face certain death.

To the people of Iran: the hour of your freedom is at hand. Stay sheltered and remain indoors because it is dangerous outside. When we are finished, take over your government — it will be yours to take. This may be your only chance for generations.

For many years you asked for America’s help but did not receive it. Now you have a president willing to act. America is backing you with overwhelming strength and force. Now is the time to seize control of your destiny and pursue a prosperous future.

This is the moment for action. Do not let it pass. May God bless the brave men and women of America’s armed forces. May God bless the United States of America. May God bless you all. Thank you.
