WATCH: Trump confirms “major combat operations” in Iran

iran

US President Donald Trump has confirmed the United States has launched “major combat operations” in Iran, following Israel’s “pre-emptive strikes” on Iranian targets.

He made the announcement in a video posted on Truth Social.

Explosions and rising smoke have been reported across Tehran, while Israel has declared a state of emergency amid fears of retaliatory missile attacks, with sirens sounding nationwide.

The escalation comes after failed nuclear negotiations, with Trump warning the US would act decisively to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Below is a transcript of what Trump said in the video:

A short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran.

Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard, terrible people. Its menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas, and our allies throughout the world.

For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted Death to America and waged an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder, targeting the United States, our troops, and innocent people in many countries. Among the regime’s first acts was backing the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, holding dozens of American hostages for 444 days.

In 1983, Iran’s proxies carried out the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut that killed 241 American military personnel. In 2000, they were probably involved in the attack on the USS Cole. Iranian forces killed and maimed hundreds of American service members in Iraq, and regime proxies have continued attacks against American forces and vessels in recent years.

From Lebanon to Yemen and Syria to Iraq, the regime has armed, trained, and funded terrorist militias responsible for widespread violence. Iran’s proxy Hamas launched the October 7th attacks on Israel, killing more than 1,000 people, including 46 Americans, and taking hostages.

Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terror and has also killed many of its own citizens during protests. It has always been the policy of the United States that this regime can never have a nuclear weapon.

In Operation Midnight Hammer last June, we obliterated the regime’s nuclear program at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. After that attack, we warned them never to resume their pursuit of nuclear weapons and repeatedly sought a deal, but Iran refused and rejected opportunities to renounce its nuclear ambitions.

Instead, Iran attempted to rebuild its nuclear program and develop long-range missiles capable of threatening allies in Europe, U.S. troops overseas, and potentially the American homeland.

For these reasons, the United States military is undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this dictatorship from threatening America and our national security interests. We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry. It will be obliterated. We will also annihilate their navy and ensure terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region or attack our forces.

We will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. They will never have a nuclear weapon. This regime will learn that no one should challenge the strength of the United States Armed Forces.

My administration has taken steps to minimize risk to U.S. personnel, but casualties are possible in war. We undertake this mission for the future so Americans and our children are never threatened by a nuclear-armed Iran. We pray for every service member risking their lives and trust they will prevail.

To members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces, and police: lay down your weapons and receive complete immunity, or face certain death.

To the people of Iran: the hour of your freedom is at hand. Stay sheltered and remain indoors because it is dangerous outside. When we are finished, take over your government — it will be yours to take. This may be your only chance for generations.

For many years you asked for America’s help but did not receive it. Now you have a president willing to act. America is backing you with overwhelming strength and force. Now is the time to seize control of your destiny and pursue a prosperous future.

This is the moment for action. Do not let it pass. May God bless the brave men and women of America’s armed forces. May God bless the United States of America. May God bless you all. Thank you.

A 41-year-old convicted drug trafficker and Bulgarian national was arrested at his home in Cape Town by the SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU) on Friday morning.

According to police, Stanislav Stamenov was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment in Romania in 2009 but fled the country shortly after.

This was after he was found to be part of a large criminal organised group involved in the trafficking of Heroin into Romania.

According to SAPS Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, it’s believed that Stamenov was hiding in Cape Town for several years, where he was working as a gym instructor in several well-known fitness clubs.

He was placed on an Interpol red notice, which is a global search request to law enforcement agencies across the world for assistance in apprehending a fugitive.

Services Adjusted as Tafelsig Clinic Upgrade Gets Underway

Tafelsig clinic

Residents using Tafelsig Clinic in Mitchells Plain will experience temporary service amendments from next week when construction begins on a major upgrade to the facility. The project  forms part of the City’s R15 million investment in City Health infrastructure this financial year.

The project will see the construction of a first-floor extension, the installation of a lift, new internal and external staircases, as well as a series of ground-floor upgrades aimed at improving accessibility, safety, and service delivery.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says the upgrade is essential to meeting increasing demand at the facility.

“This upgrade will help us meet the growing demand for services and provide safer, more accessible care for residents. We anticipate that work will be completed by the end of October 2026.”

To ensure continuity of care during the construction period, services at Tafelsig Clinic will be temporarily reallocated to nearby facilities, including the Thusong Centre located opposite the clinic.

The Thusong Centre will provide:

  • Child Health services
  • Curative services
  • Immunisation
  • Nutrition services
  • Matrix substance abuse services

The Tafelsig Community Day Centre (CDC) will offer:

  • Adult curative services
  • Mental Health services
  • BANC (Basic Antenatal Care)
  • Reproductive Health services
  • TB services
  • HIV services

All pharmacy services will continue to operate from the main pharmacy at Tafelsig CDC, while Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) medicine parcels will be issued at the Thusong Centre.

To manage patient flow and reduce congestion, the clinic will continue using an appointment system.

US Conservative leader wants Special Envoy for Afrikaners

An American conservative figure has called on US President Donald Trump to appoint a special envoy dedicated to Afrikaner affairs.

Stefano Forte, President of the New York Young Republican Club (a youth Republican Party organisation), made the appeal while addressing those in attendance at the Future of Nations Conference in Pretoria on 25 February.

In his speech, Forte referred to historical parallels between political debates and Afrikaner history, including the Great Trek and the Battle of Blood River. He also referred to Afrikaners as having cultural and historical links to Western civilisation, stating that Americans and Afrikaners were “civilisational kin”.

Using this background, he then called on Trump to raise international awareness of issues currently affecting Afrikaner communities.

“That is why I am calling on our great President, Donald J. Trump, to appoint a special envoy to the Afrikaners to show the world the truth of what is going on in South Africa.”

Forte has extensively shared his views on the supposed Afrikaner crisis on social media. In so doing, he criticised American media reporting, referencing a recent segment on the CBS programme 60 Minutes regarding claims by Trump that white South Africans are victims of genocide.

During that broadcast, journalist Anderson Cooper travelled to South Africa to investigate the allegations. Several local farmers rejected claims of a targeted genocide, describing violent crime as a nationwide problem affecting multiple communities.

Even Kallie Kriel, chief executive of civil rights organisation AfriForum, noted in the interview that he had not used the term “white genocide” when raising concerns about farm safety and property rights.

Cape Town land auction raises millions for essential infrastructure projects

The City of Cape Town proceeded with a major land auction on Thursday, 26 February, after four separate applications to the High Court seeking to halt the sale were dismissed with costs, including one court challenge on Tuesday.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis confirmed that the auction went ahead as planned, raising hundreds of millions of rand that the City says will be reinvested into essential infrastructure projects.

The Good Hope Centre was among the properties sold off for a reported R135 million. Approximately 50 other parcels of land, including residential, commercial and industrial, were auctioned.

According to Hill-Lewis, the funds generated will be used primarily in lower-income communities for infrastructure upgrades, including pipe replacements, road improvements, park upgrades and other public works.

He said the sale of under-utilised municipal land would also enable new housing developments, helping to increase housing supply and ease property price pressures.

The mayor argued that disposing of what he described as “dead assets” would revitalise neglected properties and attract investment, creating jobs and supporting economic growth.

Hill-Lewis criticised attempts to block the auction, describing them as politically motivated and noting that the City regularly conducts similar land sales.

He said the disagreement reflected differing views on the role of government, arguing that municipalities should facilitate investment rather than retain ownership of underperforming assets.

Opposition parties raise concerns over public land disposal

The sale, particularly that of the Good Hope Centre, has drawn strong criticism from opposition parties, including the GOOD Party and the ANC, who argue that the City is disposing of strategic public assets without adequately considering long-term social and heritage impacts.

GOOD Party councillor Suzette Little questioned whether the reported R135 million sale price of the Good Hope Centre represents value for money, noting that recent publicly funded upgrades and future budget allocations linked to the site raise concerns about financial prudence.

Little said the Good Hope Centre is a recognised heritage landmark and an important part of Cape Town’s architectural and cultural identity. She argued that public submissions and heritage concerns raised during consultation processes appear to have been overlooked, adding that heritage status carries obligations for careful assessment, consultation and preservation.

She further highlighted the broader social context, pointing to a housing waiting list exceeding 400,000 residents and questioning whether well-located public land should instead be used to address spatial inequality, affordable housing needs and community development opportunities.

The ANC Caucus has also criticised the auction, condemning the City’s decision to proceed with the sale of 50 well-located parcels of land despite ongoing objections. In a statement, the party argued that municipal land could be used for housing and land redistribution rather than being sold to the highest bidder.

The ANC further raised concerns that foreign individuals and companies were allowed to participate in the auction, warning that stronger foreign currencies could outprice local buyers and contribute to rising property prices in Cape Town, potentially worsening affordability challenges for residents.
