An early morning fire in Mfuleni has claimed the life of one person and left another injured.

The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service says firefighters responded to reports of informal structures on fire in Main Road, Mfuleni.

Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse says crews managed to contain the blaze, but one person died in the incident.

“Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 07:40. Two informal structures and a container were destroyed. At approximately 06:35, the body of an adult male was located beneath the debris – he had sustained fatal burn wounds.”

Carelse says a woman sustained burn injuries and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
