O-Negative Blood Shortage: Donate Now to Make a Difference

O-negative shortage

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) urgently appeals to all blood donors to give blood as soon as possible.

WCBS says all blood groups have declined, with only a 2-day supply of O-negative blood currently available, well below the minimum 5-day supply needed to maintain a sustainable blood reserve for communities in the province.

Public Relations Manager at WCBS, Marike Carli, says they are in desperate need of donations, especially as the Easter weekend is fast approaching.

“O-negative blood is often used in life-threatening emergencies when there is no time to determine a patient’s blood type. This is especially critical ahead of the upcoming Easter weekend, a period that typically sees an increase in accidents and emergencies, while fewer regular donors are available to give blood. We are calling on all blood donors to donate blood this week to help restore our blood stocks to a healthy level.”

Carli further outlined the criteria for prospective donors.

“If you are between 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. A blood donation takes only 30 minutes, and every unit collected helps maintain the province’s essential blood supply.”

NSFAS Slams Misleading Post About R630K Student Payment

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has warned that it will take legal action against those who create and spread misinformation.

The scheme says it notes with concern a social media post in which a student says she received more than R600,000 in funding. NSFAS says no such payments were made to any students.

“NSFAS has noted a social media post alleging that a student received a payment of R630, 434.44 from the Scheme. This claim is false and misleading.”

NSFAS added that an internal investigation has been conducted and revealed that the image is manipulated and appears to be artificially generated using AI.

“The student in question created this content for social media purposes, likely to gain traction as part of content creation opportunities on platforms.”

The scheme clarified that it does not make large lump-sum payments directly to students. Instead, funds are paid to institutions, which then distribute allowances under strict financial controls.

“These systems are governed by strict financial controls and oversight mechanisms. We want to assure students, institutions, and the public that NSFAS systems remain secure and there has been no irregular payment or breach associated with this claim.”

Residents advised of road closures and MyCiTi interruptions

cape town residents advised of road closures

Cape Town residents and motorists are in for a busy weekend in the Mother City with both the Cape Town Carnival 2026 event and the United Rugby Championship (URC) home game taking place.

On Saturday, the City of Cape Town’s head of Safety and Security, JP Smith, have reminded motorists and MyCiTi users of road closures that will be put in place in the Green Point precinct for the Cape Town Carnival. MyCiTi users will also experience routes being impacted and deviated.

Somerset Road will be closed from 12:00 until 02:00 on the day of the event. This will impact all traffic movement from the side streets on Somerset Road. Green Point Main Road from P14 will be closed from 14:00.

Roads impacted and MyCiTi shuttles for Stormers vs Dragons

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the DHL Stormers are taking on Welsh outfit Dragons RFC at the DHL Stadium for the team’s first United Rugby Championship (URC) home game since January.

Around 20 000 spectators are expected to attend the game at DHL Stadium. The URC game will be followed by a curtain dropper match between a Stormers XV taking on the Seattle Seawolves.

The City have advised residents and motorists that Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Stephan Way, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard will be impacted from 06:00 until after the game.

For those attending the game, the City has confirmed that free MyCiTi shuttle service will be transporting spectators to the stadium from the Civic Centre, Thibault Square and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). This service is only available to ticket holders.

The shuttle service will start operating from 12:30 from the Civic Centre, Thibault Square and the CTICC. The last bus will depart the stadium and the Green Point Precinct at 19:30.

At the CTICC, the shuttle will operate from the City Sightseeing bus stop near Entrance 3 on Walter Sisulu Avenue.

Peet and Mel Viljoen in ICE custody, Peet being held at “Alligator Alcatraz”

viljoen

Following their high-profile arrest in the United States on shoplifting charges earlier this month, it has emerged that Peet and Mel Viljoen have now been transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.

It emerged that their US visitors’ visas reportedly expired a few months ago already.

They were in the US on a B-2 visa, which allows for tourism and leisure. That expired on 24 November 2025, meaning they were in the US illegally upon their arrest.

The Viljoen couple was arrested in Florida on 10 March, on accusations that they had been running a supermarket theft scheme.

The Real Housewives of Pretoria stars, who courted controversy in South Africa before seemingly making a hasty exit to America, were apprehended at a traffic stop involving their black Range Rover.

This was after investigators linked the vehicle to multiple alleged theft incidents at a local Publix supermarket. Police claim the couple stole more than $5,300 worth of groceries from a Publix store on South Federal Highway through a tactic known as “ticket-switching” at self-checkout counters.

Among the hundreds of items they allegedly swiped were La Marca Prosecco sparkling wine, San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water, Maison Perrier flavoured sparkling water, and Coca-Cola Zero.

Bodycam footage showed the arrests of the husband and wife duo.

While they were initially booked at the Main Detention Centre in West Palm Beach, and bail was set at $10,000 each, court records have confirmed they’ve since been transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

Mel is being held at the Broward Transitional Center, and Peet is being held at the Florida Soft Side South facility, known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”

Amnesty International recently released a research report on “Alligator Alcatraz”, alleging that people detained there were living in inhuman and unsanitary conditions, including overflowing toilets with fecal matter seeping into where people are sleeping, limited access to showers, exposure to insects without protective measures, and lights on 24 hours a day.

Meanwhile, a local legal expert says it is likely that the Viljoens will be deported back to South Africa, but they will first have to go through the legal system in the US.

Dr Llewelyn Curlewis told The Citizen that if found guilty, the US could wait until the couple had served part of a sentence before sending them back to South Africa.
