Former principal Wesley Neumann elected as GOOD councillor

The embattled former prinicipal of Heathfield High School, Wesley Neumann is now boasting a new title as one of the GOOD party’s councillors in the City of Cape Town.

GOOD Secretary-General and MP Brett Herron made the announcement on Wednesday. Neumann was elected along with activist Roscoe Palm. Palm is known for his role as a political analyst and writer.

Neumann was fired by the Western Cape Education Department from his post as principal, after he refused to reopen his school during the Covid-19 pandemic, in September 2020. In his new role, Neumann will serve on Community Services. Palm’s core focus will be on Energy.

“Roscoe Palm and Wesley Neumann have been appointed to fill the two GOOD vacancies in Council. As GOOD, we are confident their wealth of experience, as well as their commitment to service delivery and community development, will continue to serve the best interests of the residents,” said Herron.

Neumann remains steadfast in the decision he made to keep his former school closed four years ago. He maintains that the call was made in the interest of the safety of his staff, pupils and the community at large. The bold move resulted in a lengthy battle with the WCED.

“I have devoted my entire adult life to education and service to my community. I was encouraged to take the opportunity offered by the leadership of GOOD to continue to advocate for better and equal access to facilities for the communities of the oppressed and marginalised,” said Neumann.
