SAHPRA says those who died, either already had covid-19 or contracted it shortly afterwards. The vast majority also had comorbidities.

More than 30% of adults in 3 provinces have received at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose. Limpopo, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape have surpassed vaccinating 30% of their adult population. This as the government aims to vaccinate more than 70% of the adult population of 39 million people by December. As of Sunday, more than a quarter of all adults in South Africa had received at least one vaccine dose. So far, more than 14.9 million jabs have been administered.

Paediatricians have welcomed the approval of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine for children, saying it will help accelerate the country reaching herd immunity. Executive member of the South African Paediatric Association, Professor Mignon McCulloch says the organisation has been asking that children aged 12 to 18 with comorbidities be vaccinated. The SA Health Products Authority approved the use of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine on children aged 12 and older, after receiving updated information from the manufacturers.
