Cornal joined the Sanlam Boland Cavaliers ahead of the 2025 season after an illustrious career that spanned nearly two decades following his debut senior season in 2008. The utility back, who earned 12 Test caps for the Springboks, leaves a remarkable and humble legacy on and off the rugby field.

His 17-year rugby journey began and ended in Wellington with his beloved Cavaliers, a full-circle moment for him, Boland, and the wider community.

Cornal’s speed, power, and tactical awareness made him one of the most exciting and talented backs in South African rugby, with standout performances for the Cheetahs in Super Rugby, the Bulls, and the Blitzboks on the international Sevens circuit – where he won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2014.

Cornal made his Springbok debut in 2014 against Wales and featured prominently during that season, scoring five tries in his 12 appearances, including a memorable brace against Scotland. His international career was briefly interrupted due to a serious heart condition. Yet, in true never-give-up fashion, he defied the odds and returned to top-flight rugby with vigour, remaining humble, inspiring many with his courage and determination.

Cornal was a humble leader and mentor to younger players off the field. His return to Boland strengthened the Sanlam Boland Cavaliers squad and reconnected him to his roots. He inspired his childhood community by giving back to the region that first recognised his talent.

Quintin van Rooyen, CEO of Boland Rugby (Pty) Ltd, said: “Cornal Hendricks was more than just a phenomenal rugby player—he was a man of integrity, courage, and commitment. His journey back to his roots at Boland symbolised who he was: someone who never forgot where he came from and always gave back. His legacy within Boland Rugby will continue to inspire future generations. Our hearts are broken, but we are deeply grateful for our time with him.”

“Cornal was not only a world-class athlete, but a proud son of Boland who always carried his community in his heart,” added Bennie van Rooi, President of Boland Rugby Union. “Our thoughts are with his family during this heartbreaking time. May his legacy live on in every young player who dreams of wearing the Cavaliers jersey.”

Further details regarding memorial arrangements and tributes will be communicated in due course.
