Expect some congestion around the Okavango Road and Amadeus Drive intersection starting today. This is due to partial lane closures, expected over the next few months as the roads at the intersection will be upgraded.

According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, the upgrade along Okavango Road (on both sides of the intersection with Amadeus Drive) is part of a private developer’s contribution to upgrading the infrastructure surrounding its development. He says the completed work will help accommodate increased traffic in the area. This is due to increased development in the Kraaifontein and Durbanville areas.

‘We welcome this intersection upgrade along Okavango Road,” he added.

Quintas says the work on the roads will start today and continue until Friday, 14 May 2027, if all goes according to plan. He says working hours will be between 07:00 and 17:30 from Monday to Friday, and between 07:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays. The councillor says residents and motorists can look forward to a wider intersection. This will alleviate traffic congestion in the future.

Quintas added, “The improved stormwater drainage here will also reduce the risk of road flooding.”

He has asked road users to remain patient and use alternative routes while construction work is under way.

What to expect

The scope of the roadworks includes:

Construction of dual roadways and provision of active mobility infrastructure.
Upgrading of the associated stormwater pipe and channel system.

Relocation and reinstallation of existing electrical cables at the intersection.
Upgrading the current open-channel stormwater drainage system to a formal piped system with kerb inlets. This connects into the new stormwater pipe network installed at the Vatican Street intersection along Okavango Road.

Modification of existing infrastructure affected by the intersection upgrades.
Relocation, re-installation and upgrading of existing intersection signalisation.

The reinstatement of all road markings to suit the new alignment.

He asked road users to be cautious while work is underway, to lower their speed and be vigilant in and around the roadworks area.

“We thank you for your understanding while we work on our infrastructure to keep Cape Town moving,” Quintas concluded.
