Metro police officers arrested two murder suspects following a high-speed chase in Seawinds on Friday. According to the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate, officers were reportedly alerted to a fatal shooting in Cafda and spotted a vehicle linked to the incident along Military Road.

Officers pursued the white Chevrolet vehicle through the streets of Capricorn until it stopped in Seawinds, where the three occupants attempted to evade arrest, but officers arrested two of them.

During the search of the vehicle, officers found two firearms and 11 live rounds of ammunition in a magazine. The vehicle was allegedly hijacked in Cafda after a shooting on Ensor Road that claimed two lives.

According to the City, the suspects face charges of the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving. Police detained the duo at Steenberg SAPS for further investigation.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says the officers’ swift response resulted in the arrest of two murder suspects who at that time were also putting the lives of others on the road at risk.

“We will not stop the call for a devolution of investigation and forensic powers. It will ensure these criminals are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and not keep returning to create chaos in our communities. This directorate is ready, and until then our officers will keep making arrests,” said Smith

The City says the murder suspects are among 474 weekly arrests. In the past week, Metro Police officers arrested 120 suspects, Law Enforcement officers made 297 arrests, and Traffic Officers arrested 57 suspects.
