Excitement is growing in the City ahead of Speed Classic Cape Town. This will be the Mother City’s first hill climb event in over 60 years. The City of Cape Town has also pledged its support to the event, which will take place on 25 and 26 October 2025.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said, “When you combine the exhilaration of the various classes of hillclimb cars, the unmatched passion of Cape Town’s motorsport fans, and one of the most iconic and recognisable backdrops in the whole world, the result can only be incredible.

According to the organisers of the event, Speed Classic Cape Town will transform Philip Kgosana Drive into a 1,8 km stretch of pure motorsport adrenaline, “a twisting climb with 150 metres of elevation.” This is set against the iconic backdrop of Table Mountain. They say the motorsport festival will see more than 140 historic cars, racing cars, and supercars take on the sloping route on one of Cape Town’s historic roads.

The event was inspired by world-renowned spectacles such as the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed and the American Pikes Peak Hill Climb. In the Mother City, Speed Classic Cape Town will be the first hill climb held here since 1962.
City backs Speed Classic Cape Town
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says Speed Classic Cape Town is going to be one of the most thrilling motorsports events ever staged in the city. He has assured Capetonians that they are in for two days of unmatched entertainment and excitement. The Mayor says he hopes Capetonians come out in numbers for the city’s first hill climb race in over six decades.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said, “Cape Town has a proud, long-standing motorsport culture. the City is always keen to support it to ensure this culture continues to thrive by creating platforms that encourage its growth.”

This ecosystem already generates around R350 million annually. At the same time, it supports a wide-reaching industry, as well as thousands of jobs in manufacturing, trading, servicing, repairs, parts, and accessories.
