The South African National Parks (SANParks) says rehabilitation work at Bontebok National Park has reached a stage where parts of the park can safely reopen to the public following the extensive flood damage caused in May this year.

The park will begin a phased reopening from 1 August 2026, with significant progress having been made to restore damaged infrastructure. SANParks says the phased approach will allow visitors to return while rehabilitation work continues in areas that were more severely affected by the floods.

The first phase of the reopening will include six self-catering chalets, the campsite, and the Aloe Hill, Acacia, and Termite hiking trails.

However, the eight riverside chalets damaged during the floods are still undergoing refurbishment and are not yet available for bookings. Die Stroom Picnic Site and the Bushbuck Trail will also remain closed until rehabilitation work has been completed.

SANParks says additional facilities will reopen as restoration work progresses.

“A phased reopening approach will continue to be implemented, with additional facilities and visitor experiences becoming available as restoration work progresses. Updates on the reopening of these facilities will be communicated as they become available.”
