The South African Police Service (SAPS) recovered a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado valued at approximately R1.5 million in Upington on Thursday, just hours after it was reported stolen in Cape Town.
According to police, the vigilance and swift response of officers of the Upington K9 Unit and Border Policing in Upington led to the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect at approximately 07:30.
The vehicle had allegedly been reported stolen in Woodstock, Cape Town, where a case of theft of a motor vehicle was opened approximately 12 hours before the vehicle was recovered.
Upington Police officers received information from a vehicle tracking company, which led them to the exact location of the vehicle near the Upington Central Business District.
The suspected stolen vehicle was intercepted, and the driver was subsequently arrested.
“The District Commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District, Major General Monica Sebili, appreciated the successful recovery and commended the members for their swift response, professionalism, and commitment, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the stolen vehicle.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Upington Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
