Stellenbosch University says the permanent expulsion of the student, who urinated on a peer’s belongings on Sunday, is still a possibility, pending the outcome of its investigation into the matter. A petition calling for the white student’s expulsion has garnered almost 100 000 signatures. The student has already been suspended and removed from Huis Marais residence. The university’s Vice-chancellor and rector Prof Wim de Villiers says they continue to support the victim.

Meanwhile: Former Constitutional Court Judge Edwin Cameron has been officially installed as the 15th chancellor of Stellenbosch University. Cameron speaking to News24 says the alleged racial incident must be used as a learning curve to avoid any repeat of similar breaches of the right to human dignity.
