Finance minister Enoch Godongwana says pulling government’s purse strings tighter, coping with less, rooting out wasteful expenditure and spending every penny of public funds wisely is how government will proceed going forward with its new budget.

This is what the finance minister had to say during a media briefing by national treasury earlier today, where he announced that a new date has been set for the delivery of his revised budget speech. The new budget will be tabled on 21 May.
“If we work together, stay focused and persevere, we can chart a better course for our economy, and our people. That is my commitment to South Africans, and that is what we aim to achieve when we table the new budget on 21 May 2025”.
Gongwana says the comprehensive review will include the Fiscal Framework, the Appropriation Bill, Division of Revenue Bill, and already tabled Rates and Monetary Amounts and Amendment of Revenue Laws Bill.

Value added tax will remain at 15%, instead of the 0.5% hike that was proposed before the National Assembly during the 12 March budget speech.
“We must do more with less, review government spending critically, root out waste, every cent of public money must be spent wisely. We must strengthen revenue collection.”
