The participant of the Two Oceans Half Marathon, who collapsed and died 1km before finishing his race on Sunday, has been identified as the 23 year old Nathan Kimbrey.
The organizers of the Two Oceans Marathon earlier said that medics were on hand to attend to him immediately after he collapsed. Unfortunately, he could not be revived.
The exact cause of death is not clear.
An eyewitness told Netwerk24 that the area where Kimbrey had collapsed was cordoned off, but space was made so that fellow marathon runners could still pass while paramedics were given space to render assistance.
The eyewitness says many people around her made the sign of the cross or prayed for Kimbrey as they past the scene.
“The medical team as well as runners were very respectful. The whole incident was very traumatic, but I feel it was handled with respect.”
Edgemead High School confirmed that Kimbrey had matriculated there in 2018, posting a touching tribute on their Facebook page:
We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of past pupil, Nathan Kimbrey (Class of 2018), on his tragic passing. Nate carried a tangible light around him that will be missed dearly.
We are once again reminded that tomorrow is not guaranteed, cherish every moment you have with your loved ones.
The 60 year old Siraaj Toefy from Schaapkraal near Philippi died of a stroke on Saturday after he complained of feeling sick just after completing his 12th Ultra Marathon.
