Cape Town police have urged the victim of a ‘road-rage’ stabbing incident in Maitland late last month to come forward to report the matter so that a criminal case can be investigated.

A graphic video has been doing the rounds on social media, showing a man, alleged to be a taxi driver, stabbing a motorist with a knife while the victim is lying on the roadway.

An altercation between the two men broke out, apparently following a road rage incident, on 26 June at the intersection of Koeberg Road and Voortrekker Road in Maitland.

According to some reports, the taxi driver was driving recklessly, cutting off other road users and using his cellphone behind the wheel.

When confronted, the situation escalated, resulting in the civilian victim in question being stabbed.

Police Captain FC van Wyk have confirmed that no case has been lodged yet.

“No assault common, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), robbery yielded no cases reported that match the description. Use of instruments was also checked and only one case involving a knife was reported, which was a possession of a dangerous weapon.”

Van Wyk has called on the victim to approach his nearest SAPS station to report the matter.

The victim’s brother also appealed for witnesses to come forward. In a local community group, the brother said that his sibling underwent emergency surgery for internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen.

He was reportedly discharged from the hospital on 1 July and is now recovering at home.
