The Western Cape SAPS has confirmed that six cases of malicious damage to property have been opened as they investigate the stoning of buses in Mitchells Plain earlier this week. 

“This office can confirm that six malicious damage to property cases was opened on 2026-07-22. These incidents however happened between 20-21 July 2026. Investigations continues, no arrest,” said Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Captain F.C. Van Wyk.

Ward councillor Norman Adonis said 18 such incidents occurred on Monday and Tuesday. Adonis noted that it started in Eastridge and then moved to Tafelsig as well as “in Ward 82, Yellowwood”.  

“Now on Monday, 10 buses were stoned; some passengers were injured. On Tuesday, 8 buses were stoned, and another few passengers were injured,” said Adonis.  

While police have advised that an investigation into the matter is ongoing, Golden Arrow Bus Services spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said that they are not sure of the motive for the incidents, adding that “witnesses identified the perpetrators as youths”. 

“Golden Arrow will not allow criminals to inconvenience our passengers, and all incidents have been reported to SAPS. We worked closely with Law Enforcement, SAPS and the local ward councillor to ensure that there were no repeat incidents on 22 July,” said Dyke-Beyer.

Councillor Adonis said he was very disappointed by the young perpetrators’ actions.

“They stoned means of transport for our community, for their parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles, [which] they use to come home. They go to work safe, they come home in a frightened environment where they’re not sure if I am going to be safe, will I arrive at home alive or will my family get a call that I am rushed to hospital or you must come to the scene, your person is no longer,” said Adonis.  

He further noted that he had been in engagements with the Golden Arrow Bus Services, which he said had opened criminal cases and added that police have promised to bolster patrols in the affected areas.  

“SAPS has given commitment to ensure visibility as well as the neighbourhood watch members – both entities were ensuring visibility since [Thursday],” said Adonis.
