As the matric class of 2025 gears up for formal matric rage events and “pen-down” parties, Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier is urging learners to celebrate responsibly.

“We encourage all matrics attending these events to familiarise themselves with the safety measures at the event itself, and the relevant local emergency phone numbers.”

He warned learners not to let the excitement of the moment cloud their judgement, reminding them how easily safety can slip when everyone is caught up in celebration. Matrics are urged to keep their valuables close, stay alert, and look out for their friends.

“Never leave your drink unattended and report any suspicious activity to the South African Police Services (SAPS) or event organisers immediately.”

Maynier also appealed to parents to stay in regular contact with their children throughout the celebrations, ensuring they know where they are and who they’re with.

“Parents should also ensure that their children understand the risks involved in any event or party. A party can have a lifelong impact if something goes wrong. Put your future first, and celebrate safely.”

Matric learners completed their final examinations yesterday. The national matric results will be announced on Monday, 12 January 2026, with learners able to collect their results at their schools or access them on the WCED website on Tuesday, 13 January 2026.
