Nine dead following weekend fires in Cape Town

Published on

Nine people, including four children, lost their lives over the weekend as Cape Town firefighters responded to a series of blazes across the metro.

The fires occurred within a 24-hour period from Saturday to Sunday, with crews battling a total of 48 incidents involving informal structures. The first deadly fire was reported in Wallacedene early Saturday morning, where four people, including three children, died. Several other fires broke out across the city over the weekend, adding to the devastating loss of life.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and praised firefighters for their tireless efforts.

“It was a grim weekend for our firefighters as they battled 48 informal structure fires in which nine people lost their lives. I want to extend my condolences to the families. Fires are devastating and traumatic for all those involved,” said Smith.

Smith urged Cape Town residents to be vigilant as the region approaches the summer season, which brings higher temperatures and increased fire risks.

“As we head into summer and much higher temperatures, I want to encourage residents to exercise caution at all times with open flames—whether fires, candles, or cooking methods,” he added.

The City of Cape Town has seen frequent fire outbreaks in informal settlements, with overcrowded conditions and the use of open flames contributing to the risks. Authorities continue to emphasize fire safety and the importance of precautions to prevent further tragedies.
