The City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies have confirmed that his breathalyzer reading was more than double the legal limit. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Safety and Security MMC JP Smith highlighted that it’s concerning considering the incident happened before 08:00 on a Monday.

“This is but the latest incident involving luxury sports cars in recent months, and certainly not a good start to the week. The fact that the driver was arrested early in the morning and with an alcohol reading of more than double the legal limit makes this offence even more alarming. The motor vehicle accident could have had serious consequences with innocent passengers sustaining injuries. Our enforcement agencies will not tolerate lawlessness and will continue to arrest suspects who break the law. We all have a responsibility to contribute towards a safer road environment,” said Smith.

The suspect’s breathalyzer reading showed 0,52mg which equates to more than twice the legal limit. The legal limit is 0,24mg/1000ml.

The arrest forms part of the municipality’s metro-wide clampdown, which recorded 235 arrests and over 45,000 fines issued in the past week.

Over the past seven days, the city’s traffic officials apprehended 23 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol. Officials have reiterated that reckless and negligent driving of any nature will not be tolerated.
