Metro Police officers have stopped two hijackings in Cape Town, just minutes apart, and arrested one suspect.
The incidents happened on Sunday afternoon, 16 August 2026, at the intersection of Sheffield and Govan Mbeki Roads.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says an off-duty Metro Police officer saw the first hijacking and reported it.
“He immediately called for backup and activated his blue lights in an attempt to stop the suspects.”
Smith says when his backup arrived, the suspects left the vehicle and ran into a nearby informal settlement.
“During the pursuit, one of the suspects allegedly pointed a gun at the officers before disappearing between the shacks.”
Smith says moments later, the suspects allegedly returned to Sheffield Road and attempted to hijack another vehicle.
“Officers responded swiftly, resulting in the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect. These hijackers were either incredibly brazen or desperate to try and carry out their criminal act for a second time.”
The suspect faces several charges, including attempted murder, pointing a firearm, hijacking, resisting arrest and the possession of a stolen cellphone.
Two vehicles were recovered, a black Mitsubishi Xpander and a silver/grey Renault Triber.
