Last chance to comment on spatial plan for Cape Town CBD

The City of Cape Town is urging residents and interest groups to provide feedback on the draft Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) for the Central Business District (CBD) before submissions close on October 31, 2024.

 

The LSDF aims to strategically shape the future growth and development of the CBD, positioning it as a vital hub for Cape Town’s resilience and economic vitality.

 

According to the City, the framework proposes innovative urban design interventions that prioritize people-centred environments, enhancing mobility and accessibility for pedestrians.

 

Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews emphasized the importance of leveraging the CBD’s unique features, such as its stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain, as well as its rich cultural heritage.

 

“The LSDF seeks to create an accessible, safe, attractive, and inclusive CBD for all Capetonians and visitors,” he stated.

 

Key components of the plan include optimizing heritage areas, launching a public land program to facilitate affordable housing opportunities, and encouraging mixed-use development that combines residential, retail, and business spaces.

 

Andrews says this integrated approach aims to foster a vibrant urban environment that supports diverse community needs.

 

The draft LSDF outlines development guidelines for eight distinct precincts within the CBD:

 

  • De Waterkant,
  • Convention District,
  • Mid-City,
  • Company Gardens,
  • East Foreshore,
  • Cape Town Station,
  • East City, and
  • Lower Gardens.

 

Each precinct will have specific recommendations regarding urban form, height management, and character assessment to guide future developments.

 

The City is inviting public comments to refine the draft document before finalizing the LSDF. All feedback will be considered in the decision-making process, which will ultimately shape land use, density, transportation, and urban design in the CBD.

 

Andrews called on residents to engage in this crucial public participation process.

 

“We have a few days left before the commenting period closes. I encourage everyone to review the draft document and submit their comments. Your input is vital for ensuring that the LSDF effectively addresses the needs of current and future generations of Capetonians.”

 

Once approved, the LSDF will play a key role in guiding public investments in infrastructure, aiming to transform the CBD into a more sustainable, equitable, and livable space.

 

The City of Cape Town is committed to creating a vibrant urban environment that not only preserves the character of the CBD but also enhances its functionality for all who inhabit and visit it.
