Thinking of getting a tattoo? Opt for a tiny one.
Oh I love tattoos, I have two tiny ones. In my opinion, tattoos are something you should really take your time with. Do not get a tattoo with a friend or a lover. Because, what if they leave? What if you leave?
I got a tattoo at 23, with my then best friend. Now, we are still friends but not as close as we used to be. Getting a tattoo removed can easily run you R500 – R1000 per session – and you need multiple painful sessions for a full, clean removal. They always look so bad-ass on other people, and I understand that you might really want one. But wait 6 months and if you then still want it sure go ahead.

Before you go under the needle
One of my longtime friends is a tattoo artist in Cape. I’ve asked her to give you her top three tips before getting a tattoo.
• Do your research. Find an artist you’re comfortable with. Ensure that you take the artist’s advice into consideration – they are the professionals. But be comfortable enough to say your say; you’ll be the one wearing the tattoo for the rest of your life.
• Consider your future plans regarding tattoos and ensure that your tiny tattoo fits into that picture. You don’t want to get to a point, 5 years in the future, where you can’t get a certain tattoo because your tiny tattoo is in the way.
• Placement is important. Certain areas of your skin regenerate faster/different to other parts of your skin. This can cause the tattoo to fade or bleed over time. For example, your bracelet or wristwatch, can cause your wrist tatoo to either fade or bleed into the skin.
In short, make sure you take your time with this process.

Tiny tattoo inspiration
I can confidently tell you, even from my own experience, getting a tattoo placed where you can see it every day might not be the best idea. However, this is an addictive art! I’ve heard and experienced this over and over again, once you get one, your brain starts looking for new and more ideas and placements.
Stars and flowers
Tattoos on your hands are pretty, just ask Hailey Bieber. BUT they fade very easily. The skin on your hands easily rubs off and often regenerates. This means your tattoos will look wonky after a few years and frequent touch-ups will be needed. Flowers and stars are always pretty! I WANT THIS:
Somewhere on the arm
The inner- or outside of your arm is also a good option. You’ll spend half of the year wearing long sleeves so you run less of a risk getting bored with your tat. HOW CUTE?!
Add some colour
Some styles might be very trendy, but speak to your artist to create a more timeless option.
Little dots
Look at different styles and educate yourself about something you are planning to permanently place on your body. The dotted style-design is a favourite of mine. These tiny designs can easily imitate a mole on the skin, but you have the satisfaction of knowing you were bad-ass enough to get a tattoo.
Baby got back (tattoo)
I almost forgot about your back. I am not too sure why you would get one on your back, when will you ever see it? But it is kinda hot…

HAVE FUN! For the sake of your future self, do not put derogatory or swear words on your body. No matter how old you are, if your mom is still alive tell her before you get one. I made that mistake…it did not end well as you can imagine. Plus, she’s a teacher, hulle is kwaai!
