WATCH: Die Kantoor: South Africa’s Take on The Office Premieres This January

kantoor

South Africa is getting its own dose of awkward office humour as Die Kantoor, the local adaptation of the global hit The Office, premieres on kykNET on 18 January and Showmax on 20 January.

More than 20 years after Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant introduced the world to the bleak brilliance of The Office, the mockumentary format is coming home with a distinctly South African flavour.

The original UK version is still ranked by MetaCritic as the best-reviewed comedy series of all time, while the US adaptation picked up five Emmys and became the most-streamed show in the world during the Covid lockdowns.

Now, as the 14th international adaptation, Die Kantoor shifts the action to Deluxe Processed Meats, a polony distribution company, where self-styled visionary Flip welcomes a documentary crew to chronicle his rise to greatness – and his questionable leadership skills.

WATCH THE TRAILER:

Meet Flip: The Rassie Erasmus of Polony

Leading the cast is 2025 Fleur du Cap and Woordfees winner Albert Pretorius (Niggies; Nêrens, Noord-Kaap), in his biggest TV role yet.

Flip is a man who sees himself as the Rassie Erasmus of polony, convinced the cameras are capturing his own version of Chasing the Sun. Inspired equally by Erasmus and Leon Schuster, he mixes grand motivational speeches with candid-camera pranks – while his long-suffering staff simply try to survive the workday without losing their minds.

“He’s grappling with what it means to be a man – an Afrikaans man – but a lot of the qualities he aspires to are archaic,” Pretorius explains. “That’s where the comedy lies, because he tries so hard just to be liked. Isn’t that what cringe is? People trying their best by being the absolute worst.”

Pretorius admits the pressure of stepping into such an iconic role was real. The character previously earned both Gervais and Steve Carell Golden Globes for their performances as David Brent and Michael Scott.

“It’s a scary one; this is one of the dream roles. Very few people ever get to play a part this big.”

Not UK, Not US – Something Uniquely South African

While Die Kantoor draws from the DNA of both versions, Pretorius insists the local series has found its own voice.

“We have our own sense of humour, so ours is different from both. It’s not quite the UK cringe or as over-the-top as the American humour. It’s something else again.”

And the ensemble nature of the show is key. Although Flip dominates the screen, the background reactions – raised eyebrows, side-eyes and silent judgement – are where much of the comedy lives.

“They had to stay at their desks even when they weren’t in a scene because the cameras could catch them at any moment,” says Pretorius. “It really made it feel like an office.”

A Strong Local Cast

The cast is packed with familiar South African faces, including:

  • Schalk Bezuidenhout (Kanarie, Hotel)
  • Lida Botha (Die Kwiksilvers)
  • Carl Beukes (Jozi, The Shakedown)
  • Ilse Oppelt (Oh Schuks I’m Gatvol, Fishy Fêshuns)
  • Daniah de Villiers (Mia and the White Lion)
  • Mehboob Bawa (Bhai’s Cafe)
  • Sipumziwe Lucwaba, former KFM presenter
  • Gert du Plessis, in his screen debut

The series is produced by Rapid Blue, part of BBC Studios, with Bennie Fourie (Hotel) serving as head writer and director. BBC Studios is handling global sales.

When and Where to Watch

  • kykNET will preview the first episode at 8pm on Sunday, 18 January
  • Showmax launches with a double-episode premiere on Tuesday, 20 January, followed by weekly episodes on both platforms

For fans needing a refresher before Die Kantoor lands, the complete US series of The Office (Seasons 1–9) and its spinoff The Paper are available to stream on Showmax.

With its mix of local humour, uncomfortable truths and very familiar office dynamics, Die Kantoor is set to bring the cringe – and the laughs – straight to South African screens.

LEAP Officers Arrested For Bribery Scheme

officers

Two LEAP officers were arrested in Parow on Tuesday night, 13 January, on allegations that they tried to bribe a motorist.

According to the City’s Law Enforcement Department, the officers pulled over a motorist in Parow on Monday night, 5 January. The motorist was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

The motorist further could not produce a driver’s licence and was also driving an unlicensed motor vehicle.

The officers then allegedly demanded a R3,000 bribe, but he couldn’t pay immediately.

According to the Western Cape Police, the suspects took a video of the driver and saved their contacts on his cellular telephone and informed him that he could pay at a later stage.

The motorist approached the police’s anti-corruption unit, which launched an undercover operation.

The two LEAP officers were arrested during the handover of the cash last night.

They will make their first court appearance in the Belville Magistrate’s court once they have been charged.

SAPS has encouraged victims to expose corruption by coming forward so that an investigation can be initiated.

Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason says this incident is incredibly disappointing.

“The City will not tolerate such behaviour, and we’ll cooperate closely with SAPS in their investigation. The officers will be served with suspension notices when they are released from custody.”

Cape Town International Airport Breaks 11 Million Passenger Mark in 2025

Cape Town International Airport has officially surpassed 11 million passengers in 2025, marking a historic milestone for both the airport and the Western Cape’s tourism and aviation sectors.

According to data from Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the airport handled 11.1 million two-way domestic and international passengers over the year – the highest figure on record.

International travel showed particularly strong growth, with 3.3 million two-way international passengers, up 7% year-on-year. Domestic travel also increased by 7%, reaching 7.8 million passengers.

December 2025 was the busiest festive season ever recorded at the airport, with 1.12 million two-way passengers passing through the terminals. Air cargo volumes also surged, increasing by 42% in the first ten months of the year, highlighting growing trade activity through the city.

Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Tourism, James Vos, said the milestone reflects the success of Cape Town’s air access strategy.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my role is working with our Air Access team to secure new routes and, importantly, more direct flights to Cape Town. I’ve been holding thumbs for us to pass the 11-million-passenger mark, so this milestone is especially encouraging,” Vos said.

He added that the aviation economy is a powerful driver of growth across multiple sectors.

“When passengers fly to Cape Town, they spend in our hotels, restaurants and small businesses, directly supporting employment across the city. The aviation economy is a key catalyst for economic growth and job creation.”

Vos noted that tourism already employs nearly 7% of the city’s workforce, and said his focus is on growing this number through targeted air access and destination marketing.

“My priority is to ensure that everything we do – from flights to campaigns – delivers real results for residents and businesses,” he said.

The strong performance is being attributed to expanded international and domestic routes, increased flight frequencies and coordinated destination marketing, positioning Cape Town International Airport for continued growth in the years ahead.

WATCH: Cable burning culprit caught near Stanford graveyard

overstrand

The Overstrand Municipality says it has intensified its response to a surge in fires across the region, amid growing concerns that some may have been deliberately started.

It comes as the Overstrand area has been battling an unprecedented number of fires since November last year, with many thousands of hectares destroyed. Recently, the Stanford and Pearl Beach fires have been the biggest concern.

The blazes have resulted in severe losses to farmers, businesses and organisations, placing livelihoods and the local economy under serious threat.

The municipality said it is increasingly concerned that a number of these fires may not have occurred naturally and are suspected to have been started deliberately.

In response, Overstrand Municipality has offered a reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of those responsible.

These concerns were reinforced following an incident near the Stanford graveyard on Monday evening, 12 January 2026.

According to Overstrand Municipality, at approximately 19:3,0 a member of the public noticed smoke in the area and went to investigate.

The municipality said the witness saw a female suspect jumping over a fence and immediately contacted law enforcement, while attempting to extinguish the fire until the Fire Department arrived.

The municipality confirmed that Law Enforcement officers responded to the scene and found burning cables. Based on information provided by the witness, a 23-year-old woman was located and arrested.

Overstrand Municipality said the suspect was handed over to Stanford SAPS and charged under the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (Act 101 of 1998). The cables were booked into evidence under CAS number 37/01/2026.

According to the municipality, the suspect later pointed out two additional male suspects, aged 15 and 20. Both were arrested and taken to Stanford SAPS. The case has since been handed over to the Detective Branch (CID) for further investigation.

Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill said the incident highlights the importance of community vigilance.

“Community vigilance plays a crucial role in protecting lives, property and the environment. We appeal to the public to report any suspicious activity related to fires,” O’Neill said.

The municipality said it will continue working closely with law enforcement agencies to prevent further incidents and ensure that those responsible for deliberately setting fires are brought to justice.

School’s back, and parents are officially in “headless chicken” mode. Between hunting down the right blazer and tackling a stationery list that feels more like a scavenger hunt, the 2026 back-to-school season is getting weird.

Forget just pens and notebooks. This year, parents are being asked to pack Domestos and Handy Andy in the school bag.

Cleaning Supplies or School Supplies?

The Joy Ride with Angel Campey took a deep dive into the ever-evolving (and slightly confusing) demands of the 2026 school year stationery list. It turns out that cleaning products have officially joined the “essential items” list for many students.

“Is my kid going to school to learn or to deep-clean the classroom?” — Every parent right now.

What’s the strangest thing on your list this year? From industrial-strength cleaners to bulk-buy tissues, the cost of “stationery” is hitting different in 2026!
