Two arrested after R1.7m drugs discovered in Krugersdorp raid

two suspects arrested in Krugersdorp

Two suspects are set to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court tomorrow after a police raid at a house in Noordheuwel yesterday led to the confiscation of drugs valued at R1.7 million.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko says they received information about drugs allegedly being kept at the premises.

“Acting on the information, members of the Gauteng Highway Patrol proceeded to the identified address where they requested permission to conduct a search, which was granted. During the search, police inspected a vehicle parked at the premises and discovered a bag containing drugs with an estimated street value of approximately R900 000.”

Sibeko says one suspect was immediately arrested. He says upon further investigation, more drugs were found.

“Upon further searches inside the house, members discovered a large quantity of drugs in one of the bedrooms. The drugs are estimated to have a street value of about R800 000, leading to the arrest of a second suspect.”

Belgian woman collapses on Platteklip Gorge; saved by trail runner

elderly Belgian woman rescued on Platteklip Gorge

Rescuers from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) responded to an emergency on Platteklip Gorge after a 66-year-old Belgian woman collapsed while hiking with her husband on the lower section of the trail on Sunday morning.

According to WSAR, the couple had walked from the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Lower Cable Station to the base of the gorge in very hot conditions when the woman suddenly began to feel weak.

“She sat down and briefly lost consciousness before regaining awareness and vomiting – a concerning sign of heat-related illness,” said WSAR spokesperson, David Nel

According to Nel, a passing trail runner from West Coast Athletic Club reportedly recognised the seriousness of the situation and immediately raised the alarm by calling the emergency number.

While waiting for rescuers to arrive, the runner reportedly used a space blanket from her running pack to create a makeshift sun shield, protecting the patient from further exposure.

“When rescuers reached the scene, the woman was actively cooled with wet towels placed on her neck and back while a paramedic assessed her condition.”

After being assessed by a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic, rescuers piggy-backed the patient down the trail to a waiting ambulance before she was transported to the hospital for further medical care.

The incident was concluded shortly after 12h00 on Sunday.

“WSAR would like to extend a sincere thank you to Medhold Medical for their generous donation of emergency space blankets. We’d also like to recognise the runner who raised the alarm, Stephanie Crossland.”

Taxi Driver Arrested Over R220 000 in Outstanding Warrants

hawks arrest human trafficking suspects

A taxi driver’s day of reckoning came on Friday when he was arrested for outstanding warrants worth over R200 000.

The City Of Cape Town says its traffic officers were conducting a roadblock operation along Jakes Gerwel Drive near the N2 on Friday when the 54-year-old driver was taken into custody.

The Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says during routine checks on the driver and his vehicle, officers verified outstanding warrants of arrest.

“The driver was confirmed to have multiple outstanding warrants to the value of R220 150. He was arrested and detained at the Athlone police station. It was an unlucky day for this driver, but a timely reminder to all motorists to regularly check for outstanding fines and warrants of arrest, and to address these promptly to avoid possible arrest.”

Smith says while the City receives many complaints about the reckless behaviour of taxis on our roads, ordinary motorists also break the law.

“He was just one of 360 suspects arrested by the City’s enforcement agencies this past week. Traffic officers made 40 arrests. Law Enforcement counterparts made 204 arrests and issued 10 151 notices, while Metro Police made 116 arrests, issued 4 871 fines for traffic and by-law transgressions and confiscated a number of drugs including Mandrax, dagga and tik.”

Smith has urged motorists to make use of the Traffic Fine Roadshow taking place in Athlone next week.

“To avoid a similar fate, best join the queue at the next Traffic Fine Roadshow, which just happens to be scheduled for next week in Athlone. Residents will once again have the opportunity to resolve fines, summonses or warrants at our popular roadshow.”

Consumer Alert: Surge in AI driven banking scams

scams

Standard Bank has urged consumers to be extra vigilant as the country approaches the Easter holidays, arguing that South Africa is facing a sharp rise in multi-layered digital banking scams, driven by rapid advances in artificial intelligence.

Standard Bank’s Head of Fraud Operations, Client Experience and Risk Execution, Marius le Roux, says fraudsters are no longer relying on a single trick.

Instead, they blend highly convincing AI-driven spoofing, phishing, and vishing to target consumers from multiple angles, placing many at risk of significant financial and emotional distress.

“In recent cases, we’ve seen fraudsters impersonate reputable individuals or bank staff with astonishing accuracy. We are seeing a rise in scams where AI-generated voices, cloned emails, and deepfake content are used to mimic legitimate communication from the bank.”

He adds that today’s scams look and sound more real than ever before, enabling fraudsters to manipulate victims into sharing sensitive banking information, unknowingly granting remote access to their banking profile, or investing in entirely fabricated opportunities.

Phishing remains one of the most common ways criminals gain access to accounts, with many victims unknowingly providing login credentials on fake websites or via malicious links and QR codes disguised as bank communication.

Standard Bank notes that these scams are increasingly sophisticated and often replicate the bank’s branding so well that even cautious consumers may fall victim.

“Once fraudsters have the customer’s username, password, or intercepted One Time-Pin (OTP), they can rapidly escalate their attack,” explains Le Roux.

He says fraudsters often combine phishing with other forms of attacks, including spoofed phone calls that appear to come from the bank’s real number. During the call, they try to scare or convince the person into sharing sensitive information like banking details, passwords, PINs, or OTPs. Sometimes they also trick victims into making payments to them.

“The fraudster’s goal is to gain access to the person’s money or personal information by creating a sense of urgency or trust over the phone. It is therefore essential for customers to remain vigilant, verify any suspicious communications, and follow strong security practices to protect their personal and sensitive banking information.”

How to protect yourself from multi-layered scams:

  • Never click links, open attachments, or scan QR codes sent through email or text.
  • Never share your sensitive banking information. This includes your login credentials, card number and expiry date, CVV (three digits on the back of your card), OTPs, or ATM PIN.
  • Avoid disclosing personal financial details, such as information about your investments or where you hold other financial products.
  • Frequently check your account statements.

Kalksteenfontein Community on Edge After Spate of Gang Killings

The Kalksteenfontein community has been left reeling as gun violence in the area escalates.

An early-morning gang-related attack has resulted in the deaths of two men in Buttercup Street.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) says that while the Bishop Lavis police have launched investigations into the double murder, the search for the suspects behind the attack remains top priority.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk says the pair sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.

“According to reports three unidentified males walked up to the two men, aged 18 and 22, and randomly fired several shots at them and fled the scene. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related; however, this forms part of the investigation. Anyone with information about this fatal shooting incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”

This brings the death toll in the area to seven, after three people were killed and four others were left injured in a mass shooting in Soetkop Street on Thursday. Two days prior, a double murder was also reported on Hanekam Street.

While the situation in the area remains tense, the Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum has appealed to SAPS to work tirelessly to restore calm to the area and ensure that those behind the recent spate of murders are brought to book.
