Celebrate Garden Day: A Joyful Tribute to Nature’s Healing Power

Published on

On 20 October 2024, South Africans are invited to celebrate Garden Day, an annual event that honours the joy and connection we find in gardens and green spaces.

This year, it’s a chance to unwind, embrace nature, and throw a party—whether it’s a picnic under a favourite tree, a floral crown-making session with friends, or a laid-back lunch in the yard.

Gardening has long been recognized for its therapeutic effects.

Research shows that spending time in nature and working with plants can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve mental health.

According to a study published in the Journal of Health Psychology, gardening significantly reduces levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, helping people feel more relaxed and at ease.

This year’s Garden Day celebrates the beauty and community found in nature.

The Garden Day movement calls on all South Africans to celebrate their gardens and green spaces on Sunday 20 October.

Dr. Anesu Mbizvo, a Friend of Garden Day, recalls her childhood spent outdoors. “Nature gave me a sense of freedom,” she says. Anesu plans to enjoy a long lunch with her grandmother, celebrating the joy of being surrounded by greenery.

Similarly, floral designer Corli Leonard finds peace and gratitude in her piece of greenery, using what she has to create beautiful floral crowns.

For avid gardener Pietman Diener, the day will be spent sharing fresh produce from his garden with family. “Life is too short not to do what you love,” he says, reflecting on the simple pleasure of growing food and flowers.

Garden Day also highlights the importance of community gardening. Ncumisa Mkabile, an urban farmer, and Codi Marais, founder of Groa, use their gardens to promote food security and uplift vulnerable communities.

So, grab your flower crowns, invite friends, and celebrate the healing power of nature this Garden Day. For ideas and resources, visit gardenday.co.za and join the movement.
