A Police Officer from Zwelitsha was convicted of domestic violence in East London. Sergeant Sipho Sydney Jack assaulted his partner on 30 March 2024, in the presence of two minor children at his residence.

He also fired a shot in the air from his firearm. He was found guilty and convicted for domestic violence by the East London District Court on 17 July 2025. Jack was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment or a fine of R1000 for assault.

Sentenced to one month imprisonment or a fine
The sentence was suspended for five years. He was also sentenced to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of R6000 for handling a firearm whilst under the influence of alcohol. The sentence was also suspended for a period of five years.

The officer resisted arrest
On the same day of the incident, reinforcement from the Community Service Centre (CSC) was called in after the officer resisted arrest. The police were then able to disarm him and took his firearm, which was not in its holster. Whilst IPID investigations were underway, the victim wanted to withdraw the case.

Sergeant (43) convicted for gender-based violence
However, her request was declined following consultation with IPID’s Provincial Head and DPP. IPID’s Lizzy Suping says Sergeant Jack was convicted and found guilty on 16 July 2025 and sentenced the following day by the District Court. The accused was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.
