The 2019 Golden Games for Older Persons ended with a bang for team Western Cape, after they secured the second place at this annual event for senior citizens. The event which was first held in the Western Cape in 2010, gained popularity in most of the other provinces since then. All participants who competed at these games are 60 years old and older. This year it was held in KwaZulu–Natal, where nine other provinces participated. The host province came in first followed by the Western Cape in second.
Team Western Cape managed to win most of their sporting codes and bagged almost all of the medals in the process. The highlight of the games was when team WC was crowned as the Champions of the men’s soccer event, when they beat three times champion Team KZN, 1-0 in the final. The good news is that the games will be heading to its place of origin, the Western Cape next year. The Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee for team WC, Martin De Villiers says, the games is not only about winning medals but it is an occasion for most participants to get out more and having fun.
“Getting up and going out to spend a little time is relaxing and a great mood booster. Even if our limited mobility allows us to only take a short walk or swinging our arms around. These games keeps us active and it is something that we always look forward to every year.”
