The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has warned job seekers about a fake online advertisement claiming that unemployed young people can earn R8 230 by working as examination assistants in December 2026.
The advertisement claims that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is recruiting people to mark Grade 12 examination papers. However, WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond has confirmed that the advertisement is fraudulent.
“This advertisement is false and should be disregarded,” Hammond warned.
The WCED is urging job seekers to be careful when responding to online job offers, especially those shared on social media.
Hammond confirmed that the department is also aware of a website falsely advertising teaching vacancies at certain schools.
“Some schools have confirmed that the advertised positions are fraudulent and were not authorised by the schools concerned.”
Hammond urged the public to exercise caution when responding to online employment advertisements, stressing that warning signs include requests to apply via private email accounts, such as Gmail addresses, and advertisements that do not follow official recruitment processes.
She also reminded job seekers that permanent teaching posts are advertised through the WCED’s Directorate: Recruitment and Selection, with applications submitted through the department’s official E-Recruitment System.
Employment opportunities for examination marking officials are also advertised through the WCED’s official website.
Hammond warned that job seekers should never pay money to apply for a job, attend an interview or secure an appointment.
“The WCED, including Head Office, District Offices and schools, will never request payment for job applications, interviews or appointments.”
