With calls for a national shutdown on Monday, 19 October 2026, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is urging residents to consider the potential impact of disruptions on matriculants, as thousands of learners prepare to write their examinations.

The planned shutdown, led by the Concerned Citizens of South Africa, aims to put pressure on the government to address rising fuel costs. The group is demanding a reduction in the General Fuel Levy and other fuel taxes, as households continue to feel the pinch of the rising cost of living.

WCED MEC Jaco Londt says protecting the matric examination process remains a priority, warning that disruptions could leave learners struggling to reach their examination venues.

“While we are all concerned about the petrol prices, concern must also be given to the over 23 000 candidates who will be writing their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination Language paper on Monday. Many of which will be relying on public transport services to reach their exam venues.”

Londt has made an urgent appeal to residents to ensure that matric learners are not left in a position where they are unable to write their exams due to unrest.

“We appeal to the general public to ensure that no action is taken that could disrupt schooling or prevent candidates from reaching exam centres on time. The interest of learners must remain paramount during this critical period.”

Meanwhile, Golden Arrow has moved to reassure commuters that its bus services are expected to operate as normal on Monday, offering some relief to learners who rely on public transport to get to their examination venues.

Spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer says the company will communicate any changes to its services timeously, should they occur.

“We plan to operate as per our schedule on Monday. We will monitor the situation closely.”
