A Malawian national has been arrested at the Beitbridge Port of Entry after authorities discovered explosive cables concealed inside luggage during a routine inspection of an Interlink bus travelling from Malawi.

The interception was made on Sunday by a vigilant border guard from the Border Management Authority (BMA), who flagged suspicious luggage during standard checks. Upon closer inspection, officers discovered explosive cables hidden inside a bag of rice.

The BMA Acting Commissioner, retired Major-General David Chilembe, praised the officers involved, saying their actions prevented a potentially serious security threat.

“This interception is a testament to the vigilance, professionalism and dedication of our Border Guards, who remain committed to detecting and preventing the movement of prohibited and dangerous goods across our ports of entry.”

Following the discovery, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Bomb Disposal Unit and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as the Hawks, were deployed to the scene to secure the explosives and support the investigation.

According to SAPS explosives specialists, the seized material has an estimated street value of around R100 000.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the origin of the explosives, their intended destination, and whether they are linked to broader criminal networks.
