Don’t let traffic fines ruin your holiday. If you keep within the speed limit, you don’t have to worry about this at all. The City of Cape Town is reminding those with outstanding fines and warrants that they will have one last opportunity this year to get them reduced. This is, as the latest traffic fine roadshow will roll into the CBD from this Friday.

“One can argue that motorists drive off with the better deal, considering the discounted amounts they pay. Not to mention the ease of doing business at the roadshow compared to visiting individual municipal courts to resolve fines and warrants,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.

For motorists, who are members of the public, they can only go from Saturday. On Friday, City staff and persons with bulk representations, i.e. 20 or more fines/warrants, can go. You will also have until 12 December to queue at the Civic Centre to get your discount. This is a week for motorists to state their case and get fines and warrants reduced at the very popular ‘one stop shop’.

“We’re approaching the time of year with increased roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints as part of our festive season safety deployment,” said Smith.

Drive fine-free this festive season

Alderman JP Smith says motorists will get to clear the slate, and the City gets to reduce the mammoth number of outstanding fines and associated paperwork. He also said that the daily cut-off time will be determined by the operational staff in charge. Smith says people still in the queue will receive tickets to return the following day and be first in line.

“The roadshows are incredibly popular, and a win-win for all concerned,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.

The Traffic Service recorded 815,613 offences between July and September

Smith says road safety and adherence to both national legislation and the City’s Traffic by-law continue to be a challenge. In the period July to September 2025, the Traffic Service recorded 815,613 offences. This is 11% higher than the corresponding period the year before. Officers executed 27,771 warrants of arrest for outstanding fines or missed court appearances. This is a slight increase over the previous year.

Smith added the following. “We’re also increasingly making use of tools like automated number plate recognition technology that can identify scofflaws with ease. So, please take advantage of the roadshow or one of our other fine payment options, or run the risk of potential arrest this holiday season, if you have outstanding warrants.”
