A Grade 11 learner has died at a school in Strand. Meanwhile, Strand Police say a post-mortem will be conducted following the death of the learner at a local high school.

The 17-year-old died on the school’s premises on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, about 12:08. The young man who died at Strand Secondary School in Onverwacht Road was named Tapiwa. Sergeant Wesley Twigg says an inquest has been opened for investigation. He says the post-mortem will help to determine the cause of death.

According to reports, the school closed its doors on Tuesday, following the passing of the Grade 11 learner. The school principal, in a letter to parents and guardians, said forensic officials were at the school on the day to conduct the necessary procedures. The letter further stated, “At this stage, the circumstances and cause of the learner’s death are not yet known.”
A post-mortem to be conducted
The school principal, L. Terhoeven, wrote in the letter, “This is a very difficult and sad time for our school community, especially for the learner’s family, friends, classmates and educators.” She has asked that people keep the learner’s family in their thoughts and prayers at this extremely difficult time.
Terhoeven concluded in the letter, “Our sincere condolences go out to the family and loved ones of our learner.”
