Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has announced a new strategy aimed at holding contractors and officials accountable for failed or delayed projects.

On Wednesday, he unveiled the South African Construction Action Plan, designed to revive stalled construction projects and restore accountability across the sector.

The six-point plan includes digital tracking of all projects and ring-fenced budgets to ensure contractors are paid on time.

According to Macpherson, the framework sets measurable targets, clear timelines, and enforceable consequences for those who fail to deliver.

“It is a framework of collective and individual accountability. Every official and accounting officer will now be measured against these metrics, and if they are unwilling to comply, they will have to make way for those who will. From today, those who cannot or will not deliver will be held accountable, whether they are contractors, consultants, or officials.”

The plan is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen governance and improve project delivery across the Public Works and Infrastructure sector.
