The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness says it currently has 45 healthcare construction projects underway for the 2025/26 financial year, the most ever in a single year.

Of these, 30 are expected to be completed within this financial year.

The projects range from routine maintenance and upgrades to major capital works and the construction of entirely new facilities.

MEC Mireille Wenger says over the next three years, the Department will invest R1.8 billion into health infrastructure.

This work will expand access, improve safety, and ensure that residents continue to receive care in facilities that are dignified, modern, and equipped to meet the demands of a growing population.

Wenger says that with more than 500 healthcare facilities across the Western Cape, regular maintenance, upgrades, and new builds are essential to keep the system resilient.

This year’s projects cover everything from routine rehabilitation to major capital works, including new facilities where existing infrastructure can no longer meet demand.

Projects Underway

  • Clinics: new or replacement facilities in Saldanha, Knysna, Philippi, Ravensmead and Mossel Bay.
  • Upgrades and maintenance: Orchard Clinic in De Doorns, Saron Clinic in Wellington, Ceres Clinic, and Bothasig Clinic and Gustrouw Clinic in Strand. As well as lift and sewer line upgrades at Groote Schuur Hospital.
  • Hospitals: a R255 million Emergency Centre at Groote Schuur Hospital, a R150 million rehabilitation of wards at Alexandra and Lentegeur Hospitals, and a R42 million upgrade at Montagu Hospital.
  • Theatres: repairs and maintenance at New Somerset, Tygerberg and Caledon Hospital theatres.
  • Mental health: new psychiatric units for Khayelitsha, New Somerset and Eerste River.
  • Enabling works: at Tygerberg Hospital, essential groundwork is being done to prepare for the long-term redevelopment of the site, including upgrades to sewerage and electrical systems and the construction of new warehouses for linen and consumables.

The MEC says behind every brick and every beam is a bigger purpose: to deliver safe, dignified and world-class healthcare to the people of the province.

“Having 45 health infrastructure projects underway, the most ever in a single year, shows our commitment to building for the future. From small community clinics to iconic hospitals like Groote Schuur and Tygerberg, every district is benefiting from investment that will increase capacity, improve conditions for staff, and ensure better care for patients. Our vision of a healthier Western Cape is becoming a reality, construction site by construction site. These projects are more than buildings. They are symbols of hope, progress and care for generations to come.”
