Cape Town police have confirmed that they are liaising with the next of kin of the man who fell to his death from the Hotel Sky last Monday. Although his identity has been confirmed, police are not disclosing it to the public. Police have confirmed his age – he was 33.

Lt Col Malcolm Poje says the family has requested to keep his identity private. His body will be handed to his next of kin, who will make the final arrangements for burial.

Poje also confirmed that an autopsy has been conducted, the results of which will form part of an official court inquest. The official cause of death will only be divulged at the inquest.

In South Africa, an inquest docket is opened when a person dies due to unnatural causes, including suicide.

Poje says they are not in a position to determine when a formal inquest will be done.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the docket will be submitted to the NPA, who will make a decision on when such a hearing will be conducted.”

The man plunged from the 28th floor of the hotel on Monday, 9 June.

Last week, police said DNA tests would be conducted to identify him, due to the condition of the body.

According to the Hotel, the man was a walk-in guest and not booked into the establishment.

He made his way to the 27th floor, where the Sky Lounge is located, and then went up another set of stairs to the 28th floor, where the rooftop is located. He then reportedly jumped to his death.

This area is off-limits to guests, and it’s unclear how he managed to access the roof, given that entry is presumably restricted to those with security tags.

From the 27th floor of the hotel, there is a last set of stairs that leads you to the 28th floor and rooftop access, but this is restricted.
