Authorities yet to identify man in Hotel Sky rooftop fall

Published on

Mystery surrounds the identity of the man who fell to his death from the Hotel Sky rooftop in the Cape Town CBD on Monday afternoon, 9 June.

Western Cape Police issued a communication on Thursday, 12 June, stating that the identity of the deceased cannot be revealed yet, due to the condition of the body.

It would thus appear that he did not carry any identification with him.

Captain FC van Wyk says an autopsy has been scheduled during which DNA samples will be obtained for the purpose of comparison with possible family members.

It is not clear whether any relatives have come forward. There is also no confirmation of whether security footage inside the hotel has shed any light on the identity of the man.

According to Hotel Management, the unknown man walked into the hotel off the street, as any ordinary person can if they want to eat at the restaurant, and made his way to the 26th floor, where the Infinity Restaurant is located.

From there, a staircase leads you to the 27th floor, where the Sky Lounge is located.

According to the Hotel, the man then accessed the rooftop (this is done via another set of stairs) from where he jumped.

He landed on a traffic island on Lower Long Street, to the shock of passersby and motorists.

Initially, it was reported that the man had purchased a ticket to the ‘Sky-HI’ ride – a 35-meter chair lift that takes you 146 meters above the city – but this was later corrected. The Sky-HI ride’s location also does not correspond to where the man’s body eventually landed.

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the Hotel’s Group Director of Sales & Marketing, Inge Dykman, said they take the security of all visitors, guests and staff seriously, and has assured patrons that they remain a safe and secure environment, which fully complies with international and local safety and security measures.
